Have you ever felt like something was missing in your Christian walk? Like there's more to following Jesus than what you're currently experiencing? You're not alone. Countless believers sense there's a deeper reality, a more profound way of living that Jesus spoke about throughout His ministry. That reality is the Kingdom of God, and learning to seek it changes everything.
In the Beginning: God's Kingdom Blueprint
Before we dive into seeking the Kingdom, we need to understand what we're actually looking for. And to understand the Kingdom, we must go back to the very beginning—because God's Kingdom agenda has been unfolding since before time itself.
Genesis 1:1-5 gives us a glimpse into how God operates: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day."
Notice the pattern here. God didn't create a finished product instantly. He took something formless and void—chaotic and empty—and brought order, purpose, and life to it. This is exactly what the Kingdom of God does in our lives and in our world.
What Does It Mean to Seek the Kingdom?
When Jesus tells us to seek the Kingdom, He's inviting us into the same creative, transformative process we see in Genesis 1. Seeking the Kingdom means:
- Recognizing God's authority over every area of your life
- Aligning your priorities with His purposes
- Watching for where God is already at work and joining Him there
- Allowing His light to illuminate and order the chaos in your circumstances
Just as the Spirit of God moved upon the waters, hovering with creative intention, God's Spirit is moving in your life right now. The question isn't whether God is present or active—it's whether you're positioned to recognize and respond to His Kingdom activity around you.
From Chaos to Order: The Kingdom Pattern
Look again at the Genesis passage. The earth was "without form and void." Perhaps your life feels that way in certain areas—your finances are chaotic, your relationships feel empty, your purpose seems unclear, or your emotions are in darkness. This is actually the perfect starting point for seeking the Kingdom.
Why? Because God specializes in bringing order from chaos and light from darkness. When God speaks into the void, things change. When His Kingdom comes, transformation follows. The same God who said "Let there be light" on day one wants to speak light into your darkest situations.
Seeking the Kingdom means inviting God's creative word into the formless and void places of your life. It means positioning yourself to hear Him speak and being willing to respond when He does.
The Kingdom Starts With Seeing
Notice that after God created light, He "saw" that it was good. Kingdom living requires Kingdom vision—learning to see what God sees, to value what He values, and to recognize His goodness at work.
Many of us miss the Kingdom because we're not trained to see it. We're looking for the spectacular when God is often working in the ordinary. We're waiting for the whole picture when God is showing us just the next step. We're focused on our problems when God wants us to see His possibilities.
Seeking the Kingdom begins with asking God to open your eyes to see things from His perspective. It's a daily prayer: "Lord, show me Your Kingdom today. Help me recognize where You're at work. Give me eyes to see what You see."
Why This Journey Matters
As we begin this series on seeking the Kingdom, I want you to understand something crucial: this isn't just another Bible study topic. Seeking the Kingdom is the central calling of every believer. It's what Jesus said should be our primary pursuit. Everything else—including all the things we worry about and chase after—takes its proper place when we seek His Kingdom first.
The Kingdom of God is both now and not yet. It's already breaking into our world, but it's not yet fully consummated. We live in the tension of this "already but not yet" reality, and learning to seek the Kingdom helps us navigate that tension with faith, hope, and purpose.
When you seek the Kingdom, you're not just improving your life—you're participating in God's redemptive plan for all of creation. You're joining the same work that began in Genesis 1, when God spoke order into chaos, light into darkness, and purpose into the void.
Your Kingdom Journey Begins Now
The beautiful truth is that you don't have to have it all figured out to begin seeking the Kingdom. Remember, the earth was formless and void before God began His creative work. Your starting point, whatever it looks like, is exactly where God wants to meet you.
Just as evening and morning marked the first day of creation, each day gives you a fresh opportunity to seek God's Kingdom. Every morning is a new beginning, a new chance to invite His light into your circumstances, to align with His purposes, and to watch Him bring order to your chaos.
In the posts ahead, we'll explore practical ways to seek the Kingdom in every area of your life—your relationships, your work, your resources, your challenges, and your calling. We'll discover what Jesus taught about the Kingdom and how the early believers lived it out. Most importantly, we'll learn how to recognize the Kingdom breaking into our everyday lives.
Reflection Questions
As we begin this journey together, take some time to consider:
- What areas of your life feel "formless and void" right now—chaotic, empty, or dark?
- How might God be inviting you to seek His Kingdom in those specific areas?
- What would change in your daily life if seeking God's Kingdom truly became your first priority?
- Are you more focused on your problems or on God's possibilities?
The adventure of seeking the Kingdom starts with a simple willingness to say, "God, I want to see what You see. I want Your Kingdom to come in my life. Show me where You're working, and help me join You there."
That's where transformation begins. That's where your greatest adventure starts.
Welcome to seeking the Kingdom.
